Arts at the Inns

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Well the first annual “Arts at the Inns” sponsored by the Back Road Inns of Central Massachusetts was a success, despite the inclement weather. Thirteen wonderful artists participated, using varied mediums including watercolors, pastels, acrylics, oils, collage, sculpture and photography. The participating artists, Bill Weeks, Lisa Regopoulos, Peter Richard, Anna Ozolins, Mary Ann Verinis, Len Haug, Julie Pepper, Michael Vinyard, Cheryl Economos, Ed Roche, George Mahana, Elaine Griffith and Lynn Hartman came from as near as Barre, MA and as far away as Florida.

Sunday saw a steady stream of visitors from around the state most of whom did not know just how special the eastern shore of the Quabbin is or how many wonderful inns are in the two towns of Petersham and Barre.

The participating artists were pleased, as the people who came had time to view the art in a relaxed, uncrowded setting. And the innkeepers were also pleased as most of the attendees were coming to the inns for the first time, so all in all the idea behind “Arts at the Inns” was a success.

Massachusetts is going “Green”

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Green is a color, green is a lifestyle, green is nature’s way of telling us that spring has arrived. And spring has definitely arrived in Petersham Massachusetts. The Swamp Pinks and the Daffodils came out just in time for Easter.

The swamp pinks make the Clamber Hill woodlands festive

The swamp pinks decorate the woodlands with a little color

Ok, so that’s not green. But the green is poking through everywhere from the grass to the new buds on the plants and trees. And what happens when nature turns green again? People return to the greens–the golf greens that is! Petersham is lucky to have the Petersham Country Club, a nine whole golf course designed by Donald James Ross in 1922. To golfers, Ross’s master craftsmanship is evident in the layout of the course with long, green fairways, hidden bunkers and relaxing stroll from tee to green.

The Petersham Country Club is offering a special in June –just $22 for either nine or eighteen holes including a cart! The catch, you have to play on a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday before 3pm.
For more information or to make a reservation contact Country Club manager Tim Bishop at Tim.Bishop@PetershamCC.com.

And Clamber Hill is matching that with a Golf Special. Book a Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday night with us in June to play golf at the Petersham Country Club and get a room for just $145. Make sure you book with the following code when making your reservation. PCCCH0610

Coming Soon — the first annual Art at the Inns

Friday, April 9th, 2010

What happens when six artistically inclined sets of Innkeepers decide to hold an open house? Seeking a good theme and wanting to support the arts, you end up with an event called “Arts at the Inns”

The event, “Art at the Inns” will be held on April 17th and 18th from 11 am to 4 pm each day. This event is sponsored by The Back Road Inns of Central Massachusetts and a complete list of participating artists is available on the association website www.backroadsmassachusetts.com.

As you can see from the map below, all of the participating inns are located along a nine mile stretch of Rt 32 between Petersham and Barre — almost exactly the center of the state.

Each Inn will feature 2 or 3 artists and serve light refreshments. We’re all trying to do something different to keep diversity among the food as well as among the artists.

And if at the end of the day you want a nice dinner, both Clamber Hill and Jenkins Inn are serving dinner, but we strongly recommend advance reservations.

All of the Inns are offering discounts to participants, so if you want to make a weekend out of it book now!

Romantic Getaways with Fireplaces — Perfect for a Rainy Winter Weekend

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Winter in Massachusetts is supposed to be a great time for outdoor activities such as skiing (downhill or cross country), snow showing, sleigh rides etc. So what do you do when the rain starts melting the magical Massachusetts Winter Wonderland?

My suggestion is to find a romantic inn with cozy fireplaces and enjoy a relaxing weekend (or even a couple of week days) snuggled in front of the fireplace. March is the perfect time for a romantic getaways, before the spring and summer activities take over. The Inn at Clamber Hill offers a terrific Romantic Getaway Package including bedrooms with working fireplaces and a candlelit dinner for two.

Adding a little romance to your life is the perfect way to take that chill out of the cold New England air!

Romantic Getaway Packages are available at Clamber Hill

What’s Cooking at the Inn? –Pear Almond Pancakes

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

The Inn at Clamber Hill produces a cooking show that airs on Athol-Orange Community Television (AOTV). In our best year we produced a show a month. Last year we did not even get a single show produced. So our New Year’s resolution is to do better in 2010.

It becomes more and more difficult to think of new recipes for the show. We want the show to be exciting with good recipes, but we don’t want to be repetitive or to give away any of the secrets that set us apart from other local restaurants.

A conundrum!

We are getting ready to film three new shows at the end of January and we welcome ideas for topics. It may be that some of the things that seem too easy or simple for us are just the kind of things people want to know. Leave your comments here for us!

But in the meantime, let us remind you of one of our more recent shows, Clamber Hill Pear Almond Pancakes, a great breakfast for a winter weekend. The award-winning recipe for our original pancakes is located on our website. We hope you enjoy them!

And the DVD’s of the show are for sale at both AOTV and the Inn at Clamber Hill. All the money from these sales goes to support AOTV.

Don’t forget to try the pancakes and send in your suggestions for future shows!

Holiday Fudge–A Christmas Present from us to you!

Thursday, December 24th, 2009

Many of us have memories of holiday baking. My mother used to bake over a dozen different types of cookies every December. My sisters and I would help of course, although it’s questionable if we were in reality a help or a hindrance. No matter, making the cookies with our mother was one of the best parts of the holiday season and we looked forward to it every year. Most of the recipes were just in her head and now that she is gone, we are trying to recreate them. Pecan Sandies, Christmas Wreaths, Fruitcakes (cookies not cake), Christmas Trees, Chocolate Chews, Candy Canes, Seven Layer Cookies, Oatmeal Cookies (fancy not the ordinary kind) and more. The cookies were both delicious and eye catching and we wrapped each and every one individually and gave them as gifts.

Alas, now a days we’re all too busy and none of us bake that much. But recently I wanted to make something to give as a gift and I pulled out a fudge recipe that is truly simple and delicious, so my Christmas present is sharing it with all of you.

1 14oz can of Sweetened Condensed Milk
2 cups of semi-sweet Chocolate Chips
1 tsp Vanilla
1/4 tsp salt (scant tsp)

Put the chocolate chips in a micro-wavable container. Pour the milk over top. Stir well so that all the chips are coated with milk. Microwave for 30 seconds at a time. Stirring after each 30 second interval. Do this until the chocolate is melted. Note do not overheat, use stirring action for the final melting. The whole process should not take more than 2 minutes. Add the flavoring and salt and pour into a greased pan. Chill in the refrigerator until firm.

Simple and delicious! We served it at the Clamber Hill open house earlier this month. And don’t forget to use your imagination to make different fudge varieties–walnuts, pecans, peanut butter, peppermints all make wonderful toppings.

So Merry Christmas from Clamber Hill!

Christmas Dinner — Enjoy it!

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

The holidays are a great time of year, but can also be a lot of extra stress and work. Everyone wants a special Christmas Dinner but cooking a really festive meal is a lot of work, especially for couples and small families. Not a lot of restaurants are open for the holidays, especially in central Massachusetts.
Clamber Hill offers you a relaxing alternative, as will be open this year for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Dinner. The Inn is decorated, the food is great.
On Thursday, the restaurant will offer it’s regular menu, with nine different entrees and on Christmas Day there will be a special pris fixe holiday menu served between 1 pm and 4 pm. As always reservations are required.
The menus for both days can be found at www.clamberhill.com. So come enjoy Christmas Dinner at Clamber Hill and spend time with your friends and family instead of the kitchen!

Decorating for the Holidays

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

What happens when you’re a florist’s daughter? You spend time in your father’s florist shop during the holidays or you don’t get to see him! The side benefit is that you learn holiday decorating from a pro. The pro is now 80 years old and retired, so I’m decorating the Inn on my own this year.

As usual I have just eight days to do it and believe me I will need all of them and then some to get Clamber Hill, a 9,600 sq ft inn, ready for the Holiday Open House.

This is always a nice relaxing event, open to the public. Each year we meet new people that live in the area and say ” we never knew you were here”. Clamber Hill has been open for 11.5 years now, so this will be our 11th annual Holiday Open House.

All the rooms will be on tour, people love to look at the decorations and get some ideas for their own homes and we will have live music. Former customers, now friends Mike Tinus and Rebecca Barca-Tinus come from Martha’s Vineyard to provide holiday music during the open house. And of course Mark, our chef, makes refreshments. We will also be selling our Gift Certificates, to the inn or restaurant, which make lovely holiday gifts. So mark your calendars for Sunday December 6th. The Inn is located at 111 N. Main St in Petersham, MA (directly across from Rt 101). So stop in any time from 1 to 4 pm.
